The New Amsterdams

The New Amsterdams is an indie rock band formed in Lawrence, Kansas, in the late 1990s by Matthew Pryor, who is perhaps better known as the lead singer and guitarist for the emo band The Get Up Kids. The project initially started as an outlet for Pryor to showcase a more acoustic-driven, introspective side of his songwriting, but over time it blossomed into a full-fledged band. The New Amsterdams' sound is characterized by its blend of acoustic and electric elements, weaving together the raw emotionality of emo and the intimate storytelling of folk and Americana.

Throughout their career, The New Amsterdams released a steady stream of albums that emphasize heartfelt lyrics and melodic craftsmanship. Their discography includes notable titles such as "Para Toda Vida" (2002) and "Worse for the Wear" (2003), each uncovering layers of Pryor's seasoned songwriting aptitude. The band's 2006 release, "Story Like a Scar," marked a high point in their evolution, showcasing a richer, full-band sound. The group continued to mature musically with albums like "At the Foot of My Rival" (2007) and their swan song "Outroduction" (2013), which gracefully marked the end of their recording era. Though The New Amsterdams have been relatively quiet since then, their thoughtful indie rock tunes continue to resonate with fans of the genre.
