The Icicle Works were a British alternative rock band formed in Liverpool in the early 1980s. Fronted by singer-songwriter Ian McNabb, the band's original lineup also included Chris Layhe on bass and Chris Sharrock on drums. They gained international attention with their single "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)," which became a hit in both the UK and the US in the mid-1980s. Their sound blended post-punk, new wave, and psychedelic elements, helping them carve out a distinctive niche in the alternative music scene of the decade.
Throughout the 1980s, The Icicle Works released several critically regarded albums, including their self-titled debut, The Small Price of a Bicycle, and If You Want to Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song. Though lineup changes and shifting musical trends led to a decline in mainstream visibility by the end of the decade, Ian McNabb has continued to perform under The Icicle Works name in later years, and the band's music remains a cult favorite among fans of '80s alternative rock.
