Alban Berg Quartett

The Alban Berg Quartett, named after the famous Austrian composer Alban Berg, was one of the premier string quartets of the 20th century, revered for their interpretations of the classical repertoire as well as their dedication to contemporary music. Founded in Vienna in 1970, the quartet quickly rose to international acclaim, coupling technical precision with passionate delivery across an extensive range of musical periods and styles. The ensemble consisted of Günter Pichler (first violin), Gerhard Schulz (second violin), Thomas Kakuska (viola), and Valentin Erben (cello), until the latter two members were replaced by Isabel Charisius and Valentin Erben in later years.

Over three decades, the Alban Berg Quartett became synonymous with the highest level of chamber music performance. Through their recordings, many of which became definitive renditions, they shared their interpretations with a global audience, earning numerous accolades and awards. Their expansive discography encompasses seminal works by composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven, whose complete string quartets they recorded to great acclaim, as well as more modern masters, including the quartet's namesake. The group disbanded in 2008 following their final tour, leaving behind a legacy of artistic excellence that continues to influence chamber ensembles around the world.
