Getatchew Mekurya

Getatchew Mekurya was one of the most acclaimed Ethiopian saxophonists, known for his distinctive style and contributions to the Ethio-jazz genre. Born on March 14, 1935, Mekurya gained prominence in the 1950s and 1960s for his adeptness on the tenor saxophone, which he played with a sense of command and vocal-like expression that drew heavily on traditional Ethiopian music. Throughout his storied career that spanned over six decades, Mekurya worked with numerous orchestras and bands, including the famous Haile Selassie Theatre Orchestra, where he began integrating the traditional war chant melodies of Ethiopian warriors into his playing, a style he referred to as "Shellela".

Mekurya's music saw a resurgence in international popularity when his work was featured on the influential "Éthiopiques" series of CDs, especially the fourteenth volume titled "Negus of Ethiopian Sax", which increased his global recognition. His album "Moa Anbessa" (2006) was the result of a collaboration with Dutch punk band The Ex, combining his powerful Shellela roots with a raw punk edge, showcasing his ability to innovate and cross cultural boundaries. His 2012 album "Y'Anbessaw Tezeta" offered a rich tapestry of his work, with deeply emotional and multi-layered saxophone narratives. Until his passing in April 2016, Getatchew Mekurya continued to be a significant figure in the world of jazz and Ethiopian music, leaving behind a profound musical legacy that continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
