W.A.S.P. is an American heavy metal band that formed in Los Angeles, California in 1982. The band's name has long been rumored to stand for "We Are Sexual Perverts", but frontman Blackie Lawless has since asserted it doesn't stand for anything. Known for their shock rock-influenced theatrics and controversial lyricism, W.A.S.P. quickly rose to fame with their self-titled debut album, released in 1984. With Blackie Lawless at the helm as the band's enigmatic lead singer and rhythm guitarist, W.A.S.P. became notorious for their raw, powerful sound and outrageous stage shows. Through the 1980s and 1990s, they enjoyed a string of successful albums and became infamous for songs like "I Wanna Be Somebody" and "L.O.V.E. Machine," as well as their infamous live performances that often featured raw meat, exploding codpieces, and chainsaw-wielding antics.
Throughout their career, W.A.S.P. has undergone numerous lineup changes, with Lawless being the only constant member. The band's music continued to evolve over the decades, explored through concept albums like "The Crimson Idol" (1992), which is widely considered their magnum opus. Following the album's near-mythical status among fans, W.A.S.P. released "Reidolized (The Soundtrack to the Crimson Idol)" as a re-recording and re-imagining of the classic concept album. In recent years, W.A.S.P. has continued to produce heavy metal anthems and thought-provoking concept records such as "The Neon God," a two-part opus released in 2004, and "Babylon" (2009), with its themes drawn from biblical visions of apocalypse and prophecy. Their 15th studio album, "Golgotha" (2015), further cements their legacy, showcasing a band that remains as provocative and heavy as ever. The band's lasting impact on the heavy metal genre is undeniable, with a legacy that has endured the trials of both time and shifting musical landscapes.
