Dick Haymes

Dick Haymes was one of the smoothest baritone voices in the American traditional pop and swing music scenes of the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Argentina on September 13, 1916, to British parents, Haymes moved to the U.S. in his teens and soon began a music career that would see him become one of the era's most beloved crooners.

He experienced his first major success as a vocalist with the Harry James orchestra before replacing Frank Sinatra in the Tommy Dorsey band. His solo career flourished in the 1940s, with hits like "You'll Never Know" and his duets with Helen Forrest. Haymes also ventured into acting, appearing in several films which further solidified his status as a heartthrob. His career saw a resurgence in the late 60s and early 70s with live albums such as "Live at the Cocoanut Grove 1972." Throughout his career, Haymes worked with other industry greats such as Benny Goodman, and his work resulted in a wide array of recordings, from radio transcriptions to studio albums, best captured in collections like "The Complete Capitol Collection" and "Dick Haymes with Harry James & Benny Goodman: The Complete Columbia Recordings." His dedication to his craft was evident in each performance until his passing in March 1980, but his legacy continues through the timeless quality of his recordings.
