Anand Bakshi

Anand Bakshi was one of the most prolific and beloved lyricists in the history of Indian cinema. Over a career that spanned more than four decades, he wrote the lyrics for thousands of songs across countless Bollywood films, helping to shape the sound of popular Hindi music from the 1950s through the early 2000s. Known for his conversational and emotionally resonant writing style, Bakshi’s words gave voice to generations of audiences, with unforgettable hits in movies like Aradhana, Sholay, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, and so many more.

Born in 1930 in what is now Pakistan, Bakshi moved to India during the Partition and started out with dreams of becoming a singer before finding his true calling as a lyricist. His songs have been sung by the biggest playback singers—including Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, and Mohammed Rafi—and set to music by legendary composers like R.D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and Kalyanji-Anandji. With a gift for capturing universal emotions in simple, heartfelt language, Anand Bakshi's legacy continues to live on in the timeless songs he left behind.
