Nicómedes Santa Cruz

Nicomedes Santa Cruz, born on June 4, 1925, in La Victoria, Lima, Peru, is recognized as one of the principal exponents of Afro-Peruvian music and an emblematic figure in the cultural landscape of Peru. A prolific poet, musician, folklorist, and social activist, Santa Cruz's work was instrumental in bringing the rich heritage and struggles of the Afro-Peruvian community to the forefront of national and eventually international consciousness.

Immersed in the arts from a young age, Santa Cruz was influenced heavily by his family's deep musical traditions. Notably, his sister, Victoria Santa Cruz, also emerged as a significant cultural figure. Nicomedes developed his signature style of "décimas," which are ten-line stanzas of poetry, often improvised and set to music. His album "Décimas y Poemas Afro-Peruanos" is a testament to this form. Over the years, his work, including renowned pieces like "Canto Negro" and "Cumanana," has explored themes of identity, history, and racial equality, cementing his legacy as a pivotal voice in the affirmation of Afro-Peruvian identity. Santa Cruz's artistic influence remains palpable long after his passing on February 5, 1992, as new generations continue to discover and celebrate his contributions to music and social justice.
