Tim Ovens is a renowned German pianist, chamber musician, composer, and piano educator. Born on February 11, 1960, in Flensburg, Germany, he studied piano in Hannover and Vienna under notable instructors such as Kurt Bauer, Hans Leygraf, and Paul Badura-Skoda. Ovens has had a distinguished career, marked by extensive international performances and teaching positions. He was a guest lecturer at the Musikhochschule Xi’an in 1987 and later taught at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover from 1988 to 2009. Since 2009, he has been a professor of piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. His repertoire spans a wide range of piano music, with a particular focus on works by Schubert, Schumann, Debussy, and John Cage. Ovens has released numerous CDs featuring these composers and has collaborated with various orchestras and ensembles.
Ovens' musical journey has also taken him to China, where he was one of the first German pianists to live and perform after the country opened up. He has established a strong connection with Asian culture, collaborating with artists like Ma Xiao Hui to blend traditional Chinese and Western music. His recent releases include works by John Cage, Schubert, and Schumann, showcasing his versatility and mastery of diverse musical styles. Ovens continues to be active in the music scene, performing at festivals like the Schleswig-Holstein Musikfestival and the Dresdner Musikfestspiele.
