Sparta is an American rock band from El Paso, Texas, formed in 2001. The band emerged from the ashes of the influential post-hardcore band At the Drive-In, with Jim Ward (vocals/guitar), Paul Hinojos (bass), and Tony Hajjar (drums) seeking to forge a new musical path after At the Drive-In's sudden hiatus. Sparta's sound was initially characterized by a mix of alternative rock and post-hardcore elements, with an emphasis on melody and emotionally charged lyrics. Their debut album, "Wiretap Scars," released in 2002, resonated well with fans and critics alike, demonstrating the band's potential beyond their previous association.
Over the years, Sparta experienced several lineup changes with Keeley Davis joining the band as a guitarist and backing vocalist. Their subsequent albums, "Porcelain" (2004) and "Threes" (2006), continued to refine their sound, exploring deeper and more complex musical arrangements. Following a hiatus that allowed members to pursue other projects, the band made a compelling return with "Trust the River" in 2020, marking their first full-length album in 14 years. Sparta's dedication to evolution while maintaining a core connection to their roots is evident in their later work, including singles such as "Empty Houses" and "Believe," and their impact on the post-hardcore and alt-rock scenes remains significant to this day.
