Art Tatum

Art Tatum, born Arthur Tatum Jr. on October 13, 1909, in Toledo, Ohio, is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. Despite being partially blind from infancy, Tatum's extraordinary talent and innovative playing style left an indelible mark on the world of jazz. His virtuosity was characterized by his swift and complex runs, his impeccable sense of timing, and his ability to improvise with harmonic ingenuity. He drew inspiration from the music of Fats Waller, among others, and transcended the stylistic and technical boundaries of his time.

Tatum's career blossomed in the 1930s and '40s, a period that saw him creating some of his most renowned recordings. Tracks such as "Tiger Rag" became showcases for his phenomenal technique and imagination. Not merely content with solo performances, Tatum also engaged in collaborations with leading jazz figures like Ben Webster and Roy Eldridge. His prolific output included a series of solo piano pieces that continue to amaze and influence pianists across all genres. Art Tatum passed away prematurely at the age of 47 on November 5, 1956, but his legacy endures through the aforementioned releases and the many musicians who still study his recordings for insight into his unparalleled musicianship.
