Klimt 1918 is an Italian post-rock and shoegaze band whose music is distinctively rich in atmosphere and emotion. Named after the Viennese painter Gustav Klimt and the year that saw the end of World War I, the band was formed in 1999 by brothers Marco and Paolo Soellner. Their sound encompasses a blend of alternative rock, shoegaze, and dream pop, all infused with melancholic undertones and textured layers that evoke a sense of nostalgia and yearning. They often imbue their music with historical and personal themes, creating sonic landscapes that are both intimate and expansive.
The band first garnered attention with their debut album "Undressed Momento" (2003), which established their atmospheric sound. The subsequent albums "Dopoguerra" (2005), with its poetic examination of post-war themes, and "Just in Case We'll Never Meet Again (Soundtrack for the Cassette Generation)" (2008), with its nostalgic look at the passion and poetry of younger years, have cemented their place in the European underground music scene. In recent years, Klimt 1918 released the ambitious double album "Sentimentale Jugend" (2016), which was divided into two parts that showcase the band's dual nature; "Sentimentale" expresses a softer, more introspective side, while "Jugend" dives into a heavier, more aggressive sound. Their mastery of mood and narrative is evident in their 2020 EP "Comandante," where they continue to cultivate their signature style of emotionally charged and cinematically textured music that resonates with an international audience.
