Beherit is a band whose name has become synonymous with the darker, more esoteric fringes of black metal. Hailing from Finland and formed in 1989 by Marko Laiho (known by his stage name Nuclear Holocausto), Beherit started as a nefarious and chaotic black metal act. They quickly gained notoriety in the underground metal scene with a sound that was raw, primitive, and steeped in satanic imagery, aligning with the emergent second wave of black metal that was spreading across Europe.

Beherit's discography is marked by a restless evolution, with albums like "Drawing Down the Moon" (1993) becoming cult classics for their atmospheric and ritualistic approach to the genre. After this release, the band took a turn that surprised many, diving into dark ambient and experimental electronics with albums such as "H418ov21.C" (1994) and "Electric Doom Synthesis" (1995), where they abandoned traditional metal instrumentation altogether. Following a lengthy hiatus, Beherit made a return to their black metal roots with "Engram" in 2009, an album that rekindled the raw aesthetic of their early work while showcasing a matured sense of composition. Despite their sporadic releases and enigmatic presence, Beherit's influence on both black metal and dark ambient music is indelible, cementing their cult status among fans of extreme music.
