Lorin Maazel (March 6, 1930 – July 13, 2014) was an American conductor, violinist, and composer whose illustrious career in music spanned over seven decades. Born in Paris, France, to American parents, Maazel was a child prodigy, conducting his first orchestra at the age of seven. He went on to direct some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna State Opera. Maazel was renowned for his brilliant technique, meticulous attention to detail, and a distinctively rich interpretation of a broad repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music.
