The Blackwood Brothers

The Blackwood Brothers are a legendary Southern gospel quartet that formed in 1934, hailing from Choctaw County, Mississippi. Known for their tight harmonies and inspirational sound, they became pioneers in gospel music, helping shape the genre throughout the 20th century. The group was founded by Roy Blackwood and included his brothers Doyle and James, with R.W. Blackwood (Roy’s son) later joining. Their career took off after moving to Memphis in the 1950s, and they gained widespread attention through radio, recordings, and live performances.

With a style rooted in traditional gospel, The Blackwood Brothers became one of the most awarded groups in gospel music history, earning numerous Grammys and Dove Awards over the decades. Despite tragic losses — including a plane crash in 1954 that claimed the lives of R.W. and fellow member Bill Lyles — the group continued with strength and faith. Through decades of changing lineups, they've remained a cornerstone of gospel music, inspiring generations with their unwavering message and harmonious sound.
