Trampled by Turtles is an American bluegrass/folk-rock band from Duluth, Minnesota. Formed in 2003, the band's unique sound blends traditional bluegrass components with the energy of rock and the introspection of folk music. Trampled by Turtles was founded by Dave Simonett, originally as a side project, after his main gear was stolen and he shifted to playing acoustic music with friends. He was quickly joined by Tim Saxhaug on bass, Dave Carroll on banjo, Erik Berry on mandolin, and Ryan Young on fiddle. The band broke through with their 2010 album "Palomino," with the standout track "Wait So Long" becoming an instant hit within the indie folk community.
Throughout the years, Trampled by Turtles has continued to evolve their sound, maintaining an independent and improvisational spirit often likened to jam bands but firmly rooted in Americana traditions. With their most recent releases such as "Alpenglow," indicative of their constant creative progression, they've shown a commitment to crafting songs that combine soul-searching lyricism with vigorous, string-driven melodies. Notable releases like "Sigourney Fever," and their rendition of Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees," showcase their deft ability to play with genre boundaries and reinterpret influences. Despite this varied musical exploration, at their core, the essence of Trampled by Turtles remains a heartfelt conveyance of emotion through the strum of stringed instruments, weaving narratives of life's ebb and flow into their rich acoustic tapestries.
