Shamim Ahmed Khan (1938–2012) was a distinguished sitarist and composer, renowned as a devoted disciple of the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar of the Maihar gharana. Born in Baroda, Gujarat, into a family of hereditary musicians belonging to the Agra gharana, Shamim initially trained in vocal classical music but switched to the sitar after a bout of typhoid affected his singing range. He made his solo recording debut at 29 and went on to perform at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center, as well as collaborating with Western musicians such as Buddy Rich and Paul Horn. Known for his humble and dedicated approach, Shamim Ahmed Khan also taught at Ravi Shankar’s school in California while maintaining an active performance career. His contributions earned him the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1994, marking him as a respected figure in Hindustani classical music until his passing in 2012.
