The Esbjörn Svensson Trio, commonly known as e.s.t., was a pioneering Swedish jazz trio formed in 1993, consisting of Esbjörn Svensson (piano), Dan Berglund (double bass), and Magnus Öström (drums). The ensemble broke new ground in jazz through their integration of classical and rock elements into a unique contemporary sound, characterized by haunting melodies and energetically creative rhythms, masterfully taking advantage of electronic effects and the studio as an extended compositional tool.
As the driving force behind the "nu jazz" movement, e.s.t. gained international acclaim with albums such as "Seven Days of Falling" and "Viaticum," which were both commercially successful and critically lauded for their innovative approach to modern jazz. In 2005, their album "Viaticum" and its companion "Viaticum Platinum (Live)" secured their place as jazz icons. Tragically, the trio's journey came to an abrupt end when Svensson died in a scuba diving accident in 2008. Nevertheless, the band's influence continues to resonate, as seen in their posthumously released works like "Leucocyte" and "301," alongside spirited live recordings such as "e.s.t. Live in Hamburg" and "Live in London," further cementing their legacy as visionaries in the jazz genre.
