Papa Grows Funk was a quintessential New Orleans funk ensemble, known for their groovy, improvisational live performances and seamless blend of classic funk with New Orleans-style rhythm and blues. The band was formed in 2000 when keyboardist and vocalist John "Papa" Gros united a group of prominent local musicians for an impromptu jam session at the Old Point Bar. This session included June Yamagishi on guitar, Jason Mingledorff on saxophone, Marc Pero on bass, and Russell Batiste Jr. on drums. The chemistry was undeniable, and what started as a casual get-together quickly turned into a weekly gig at the Maple Leaf Bar, which became a staple of their early history and led to their album "Live at the Leaf."
Through their career, Papa Grows Funk embodied the spirit of New Orleans in their music. They earned widespread recognition both locally and internationally, bringing the essence of their city’s rich musical heritage to the world stage. They released a series of acclaimed albums, with some of their most celebrated work including "Needle in the Groove," which showcased their tight musicianship and was co-produced by the legendary Allen Toussaint and Tom Drummond from Better Than Ezra; "Mr. Patterson's Hat," featuring their signature interplay of dynamic horn lines, soulful vocals, and a relentless groove; and their exuberant track "Shakin'." While the band decided to part ways in 2013 after a formidable 13-year run, their music continues to resonate with fans of funk and New Orleans music enthusiasts. Their final live album, "The Last Leaf," captures the energy and passion of their farewell show, leaving listeners with an authentic taste of their electrifying live sound.
