Arthur De Greef

Arthur De Greef (1862-1940) was a prominent Belgian pianist and composer who made significant contributions to the musical world during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A student of the famous Franz Liszt, De Greef was known for his profound technique and sensitive interpretation, particularly in the music of Romantic composers. He enjoyed a successful career as a concert pianist, touring widely and often performing for royalty, including King Leopold II of Belgium, who was a strong supporter of his work.

Although De Greef is not as well-known today as some of his contemporaries, he was a respected musician of his time, and his recordings and compositions offer a valuable insight into the performance practices of the Romantic era. His renditions of works by Edvard Grieg, such as the iconic Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16—which he recorded and performed to high acclaim—are an essential part of his legacy. Apart from excelling in interpreting the works of Grieg, with whom he maintained a close friendship, De Greef also composed his own music, including two piano concertos which are representative of his lush, romantic style, and have been revived in recent years, showing continued interest in his oeuvre.
