Sven-Åke Johansson

Sven-Åke Johansson is a pioneering figure in European free jazz and avant-garde music. Born in Sweden in 1943, he became a key player in the free improvisation scene from the 1960s onward, especially in Germany, where he has spent much of his career. Johansson is best known as a drummer, but he's also a composer, poet, and performance artist, with a body of work that spans experimental jazz, sound art, and modern classical music. He has collaborated with notable artists like Peter Brötzmann and Alexander von Schlippenbach, and has been a vital part of the vibrant Berlin improvisational scene.

Johansson's work is known for its inventiveness and sometimes eccentric approach—he's staged performances for unconventional ensembles, including his famous "Konzert für 12 Traktoren" (Concert for 12 Tractors). His music often blends humor, abstraction, and meticulous structure, and he continues to release new projects that push the boundaries between composed and improvised sound. As both a performer and a conceptual artist, Johansson has made a lasting mark on contemporary experimental music.
