La Roux is the synth-pop project fronted by the British singer, songwriter, and record producer Elly Jackson. Formed in 2006, La Roux gained prominence with their self-titled debut album in 2009, which was a critical and commercial success, known particularly for the hit singles "In for the Kill" and "Bulletproof." The name 'La Roux' was chosen as a nod to Jackson's gender-ambiguous stage persona and red hair (roux is French for 'red'); however, it has morphed over time to become synonymous with her solo work after the departure of her collaborator Ben Langmaid, who was part of the initial duo.
Jackson's sharp, androgynous style and piercing voice became emblematic of La Roux's aesthetic, carrying the act's '80s-tinged electronic sound into a modern landscape. The project's second album, "Trouble in Paradise," released in 2014, further solidified Jackson's reputation for crafting infectious melodies with a retro-futuristic flair. La Roux's music is celebrated for its blend of catchy pop sensibilities with the icy coolness of electro, all delivered with a distinctly British quirkiness. With a more sporadic release schedule in the 2020s, including work such as "Discoproof" and "Damaged Goods," La Roux continues to dabble in the music scene, maintaining the same electronic gutsiness that drew in fans more than a decade earlier.
