Iced Earth

Iced Earth is an American heavy metal band that first rose to prominence in the early 1990s. Founded by rhythm guitarist and main songwriter Jon Schaffer in 1985 under the name Purgatory, the band went through a few lineup changes before settling on the name Iced Earth and releasing their eponymous debut album in 1990. Hailing from Tampa, Florida—a city known for its historic death metal scene—Iced Earth carved out their unique niche by incorporating a blend of power metal's melodic sensibilities with thrash metal's aggression, all seasoned with lyrical themes that draw from history, literature, and fantasy.

Over the decades, Iced Earth has earned a reputation for their consistent delivery of epic metal anthems and concept albums, despite numerous lineup changes. The band’s sound is characterized by hefty riffs, complex guitar harmonies, and dramatic storytelling, epitomized by the ‘Something Wicked’ saga—a recurring thematic concept woven through many of their albums. Albums like "The Dark Saga," "Something Wicked This Way Comes," and "Dystopia" have cemented their legacy in the metal genre. Their most recent efforts, such as "Incorruptible" and the evocative "Plagues of Babylon," further showcase Iced Earth's commitment to crafting powerful and ambitious metal opuses. Despite controversies and the social implications concerning Jon Schaffer's personal actions and legal troubles in recent years, the musical entity of Iced Earth remains a significant chapter in the annals of heavy metal history.
