LADYBABY, a unique and genre-defying music group from Japan, initially captivated audiences with their distinctive blend of kawaii (cute) pop and heavy metal elements – a subgenre often referred to as kawaii metal. Formed in 2015, the act originally featured the cross-dressing wrestler Ladybeard (Richard Magarey), alongside aspiring idols Rie Kaneko and Rei Kuromiya. The trio quickly gained international attention with the viral hit "Nippon Manju," a song that celebrated Japanese culture and showcased their signature sound blending sweet pop melodies with hard-hitting metal riffs.
Despite the departure of Ladybeard in 2016, LADYBABY continued as The Idol Formerly Known As LADYBABY with Kaneko and Kuromiya at the helm, releasing tracks like "Renge Chance!" and "Age-Age Money," which continued their tradition of high-energy, genre-mashing music. The group experienced another evolution following Kuromiya's retirement in late 2017. Returning once more to their original name LADYBABY and adding new members Fuka Karasawa, Nana Ikeda, and Emily Arima, the group carried forward their legacy until their final disbandment in early 2020, signified by their farewell concert "The LAST LIVE at LIQUID ROOM, Tokyo -January 13, 2020-" and the release of their single "REBURN." Amidst their shifting lineup and amidst the backdrop of the ever-changing J-Pop landscape, LADYBABY left a memorable mark with their bold fusion of pop idol culture and metal, as well as their spirited live performances.
