Gary Stewart

Gary Stewart was a distinct voice in the world of country music, best known for his honky-tonk sound and vibrato-laden voice that earned him acclaim and a dedicated following in the 1970s and 1980s. Born on May 28, 1944, in Letcher County, Kentucky, Stewart moved to Fort Pierce, Florida, as a young boy. His music career took off in the early 1970's after signing with the RCA Records label, and he quickly became recognized for his unique blend of Southern rock, country, and blues.

Stewart's 1975 album "Out of Hand" was the starting point of his successful run, featuring hits like "She's Actin' Single (I'm Drinkin' Doubles)" and "Drinkin' Thing," which became anthems for heartache and hard-drinking lifestyles. Although his commercial success waned in the 1980s, Stewart continued to remain an influential figure in honky-tonk music, appreciated for his raw emotional delivery and the authenticity of his songwriting. Albums like "Your Place or Mine" and "Brand New" showcased his ability to evolve with the times while remaining true to his roots. Despite battling personal issues and the tragic loss of his son in 1988, Gary Stewart maintained a loyal fan base through sporadic recordings and live performances until his own untimely death in 2003. "The Essential Gary Stewart" serves as a poignant reminder of his significant contribution to country music and his enduring legacy.
