The Tornadoes were an instrumental surf rock band from Redlands, California, best known for their iconic 1962 hit "Bustin' Surfboards." Formed in high school, the original lineup featured Gerald Sanders and Leonard Delaney on guitars, Norman Sanders on bass, and drummer Jesse Sanders. Though often lumped in with the Southern California surf scene, their sound incorporated elements of rockabilly and even prefigured some of the garage rock sounds of the later '60s. While "Bustin' Surfboards" remains their most recognizable track, they released a handful of other singles and contributed to the surf rock soundtrack of the era.
Despite their relatively short lifespan and limited output, The Tornadoes' influence on surf and instrumental rock is undeniable. "Bustin' Surfboards" is considered a classic of the genre, frequently appearing in surf films, documentaries, and compilations. The raw energy and driving rhythms of their music continue to resonate with fans today, and their legacy as surf rock pioneers remains firmly intact.
