The McAuley Schenker Group, typically abbreviated as MSG, is a partnership that bloomed between former Scorpions and UFO guitarist Michael Schenker and singer Robin McAuley. The group was formed in 1986 after Schenker decided to part ways with the original MSG lead vocalist, Gary Barden. With the inclusion of McAuley, the band's direction shifted slightly from the hard rock focus of Schenker's earlier work to include elements of melodic rock, which were popular in the mid-to-late 1980s.
Their first album together, “Perfect Timing”, released in 1987, set the tone for what was to come, with hit singles like "Gimme Your Love" helping to establish the band's presence on the rock scene. This was followed by the hard-hitting "Save Yourself" in 1989, which further solidified their status, featuring the anthemic title track and the ballad "Anytime" which garnered significant radio play. The band continued to evolve with the release of “M.S.G.” in 1992, and “Nightmare” helped keep their sound relevant in a changing musical landscape. In 1992, the group showcased a more intimate side with “Unplugged Live”, a recording that captured the raw and acoustic reinterpretations of their songs. Despite the group disbanding in the early 1990s as grunge and alternative rock began to dominate, the legacy of the McAuley Schenker Group endures, with their blend of virtuosic guitar work and catchy hooks earning them a permanent spot in the annals of rock history.
