Paul van Kempen

Paul van Kempen was a respected Dutch conductor, particularly active in the mid-20th century. Born in 1893, he began his career as a violinist before turning to conducting. Van Kempen was known for his precise and expressive style, and he worked with several major European orchestras throughout his career, including the Dresden Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic. He was especially admired for his interpretations of German and Russian Romantic repertoire, conducting works by Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Mahler with intensity and clarity.

His recordings—many of which have been reissued in recent years—highlight his brilliant craftsmanship and attention to detail. Paul van Kempen passed away in 1955, but his recordings remain a treasure for classical music enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into a richly interpretive performing tradition of the early-to-mid 20th century.
