Tormentor

Tormentor is a seminal black metal band hailing from Budapest, Hungary. Formed in 1986, their early work was influential in the burgeoning second wave of black metal, despite political and cultural barriers of the time stifling their immediate impact. Tormentor is renowned for their dark, atmospheric compositions infusing traditional heavy metal with the raw, primal aggression that would become a hallmark of the black metal genre. The band initially gained cult status within the underground metal scene through their infamous 1988 demo "Seventh Day of Doom," which circulated widely through tape trading networks, despite the band’s geographic isolation from the Nordic black metal epicenters.

In 1995, Tormentor released their first full-length album "Anno Domini," which although recorded in 1988, faced numerous delays due to the aforementioned barriers and the political climate in Eastern Europe. The album was not just a powerful statement of the group's musical vision but also an inspiration for many acts that followed. After a period of dormancy, Tormentor returned to the scene with "Recipe Ferrum! 777" in 2000, displaying a matured sound that retained the intensity and darkness of their early work. The musicians behind Tormentor, particularly founder and guitarist Attila Szigeti and iconic vocalist Attila Csihar who later joined Mayhem, have carved out a respected legacy within the metal community, influencing countless artists and fans with their brand of haunting, atmospheric black metal.
