Celedonio Romero

Celedonio Romero (1913-1996) was an eminent classical guitarist, composer, and patriarch of the Romero family, hailed internationally as "The Royal Family of the Guitar." Born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, although he is often associated with Spain where he grew up, Romero’s musical journey began when he was just six years old. His prodigious talent soon became apparent, and by the young age of 22, he had already embarked on a professional career, giving concerts across Spain. He was not only a virtuoso performer but also a prolific composer, contributing significantly to the guitar repertoire.

Romero’s legacy, however, extends beyond his personal musicianship to his family, with whom he performed as part of Los Romeros quartet formed in 1957. This musical dynasty includes his sons Celin, Pepe, and Angel—all acclaimed guitarists in their own right. Together, they gained remarkable esteem internationally, performing with major orchestras and at prestigious venues, and thus significantly popularizing the classical guitar. Celedonio’s compositions and arrangements often reflected his Spanish heritage, incorporating elements of Iberian folk music traditions, which can be heard in recordings such as "Granados: 12 Danzas Españolas" and the transcriptions of works by Bach and Sanz. Even after his passing, Celedonio Romero’s influence endures through his sons, his music, and generations of guitarists who revere his artistry.
