The Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (OSESP) – São Paulo State Symphony – stands as a cornerstone of Brazilian cultural life, reflecting the vibrancy and dynamism of São Paulo itself. Established in 1954, OSESP has grown in stature under the leadership of a succession of illustrious Music Directors, including the likes of Heitor Villa-Lobos in its early days, and more recently, Marin Alsop, who served from 2012 to 2019. The orchestra plays an important role in the dissemination and preservation of Brazilian classical music, as evidenced by its performances and recordings of works by Brazilian composers such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, Camargo Guarnieri, and Claudio Santoro.
Under the guidance of its conductors and guest artists, OSESP has undertaken an extensive recording agenda, recently releasing critically acclaimed albums that showcase the rich textures of Brazilian music as well as international repertoire. Their discography highlights works by Villa-Lobos including his cello concertos and symphonies, and an exploration of Guarnieri’s Chôros. Their commitment to diverse programming can also be seen in their recordings of Leonard Bernstein’s eclectic compositions, as well as in the compelling interpretations of Sergei Prokofiev's symphonic pieces. With a passionate dedication to both the masterworks of the classical canon and the promotion of new music, OSESP has solidified its role as a leading interpreter of orchestral music in Latin America and continues to attract audiences worldwide with its innovative and thoughtful presentations.
