Antonio Maria Bononcini was an Italian Baroque composer and cellist born in 1677 in Modena. He was the younger brother of the more famous Giovanni Bononcini, and like his sibling, Antonio made a name for himself in the music scene of the early 18th century. He studied under Giovanni Paolo Colonna in Bologna and eventually worked in several European cities, including Rome and Vienna. He served as a court musician and later returned to his native city, where he became maestro di cappella at the Cathedral of Modena.
Antonio Maria Bononcini is known for his sacred compositions, including oratorios and cantatas, as well as instrumental music. Some of his notable works include the oratorio La decollazione di San Giovanni Battista and the poignant Stabat Mater. While not as widely recognized as his brother, Antonio’s music is appreciated for its lyrical style and refined craftsmanship, and it continues to be performed and recorded by early music specialists today.
