Born in Italy on May 4, 1971, but raised in Boulder, Colorado, Mahanthappa is of Indian descent and has thus developed a unique sound that reflects his bi-cultural heritage. He is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and holds a Master of Fine Arts from DePaul University.
