Audio Active is a pioneering Japanese band known for their innovative blend of reggae and dub with other genres, carving out a niche in the music scene that's as eclectic as it is electrifying. Formed in Tokyo in the late 1980s by Masa (Masayuki Kurihara), the group became notable for their futuristic soundscapes, heavily influenced by the works of dub legends like Lee "Scratch" Perry. Other core members included bassist Takeshi Akimoto, guitarist Shigemoto Nanao, and turntablist/programmer 2DD. They rose to international prominence in the 1990s, particularly within the underground music circuit.
Audio Active's discography offers a kaleidoscope of sonic textures, seen in albums such as "Happy Happer" (1995) and "The Way Out Is the Way In" (1995), which was a collaboration with dub master Adrian Sherwood. They continuously evolved, embracing electronic elements and ambient sounds in their later works like "Apollo Choco" (1997), "Back to the Stoned Age" (2005), and "Melt 1" (2007). Their last release, the hypnotically rhythmic fusion album "Bong," further asserted their status as masters of genre-blending. Audio Active's bold experimentation and lush, layered production have secured them a cult following and a legacy in the alternative dub scene.
