Formed in Tokyo in the late 1980s by Masa (Masayuki Kurihara), the group became notable for their futuristic soundscapes, heavily influenced by the works of dub legends like Lee "Scratch" Perry. Other core members included bassist Takeshi Akimoto, guitarist Shigemoto Nanao, and turntablist/programmer 2DD. They rose to international prominence in the 1990s, particularly within the underground music circuit.

Audio Active's discography offers a kaleidoscope of sonic textures, seen in albums such as "Happy Happer" (1995) and "The Way Out Is the Way In" (1995), which was a collaboration with dub master Adrian Sherwood.
