Victor Ewald was a Russian composer, engineer, and cellist best known for his pioneering work in brass chamber music. Born in 1860 in Saint Petersburg, Ewald was part of the circle of musicians and intellectuals associated with the Russian nationalist school, and he balanced his engineering career with a deep passion for music. He played the cello and was active in chamber music circles throughout his life.
Ewald's major contribution to music is his series of brass quintets, which are considered among the first original works written for the modern brass quintet instrumentation. His Brass Quintets Nos. 1–4, composed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, showcase a rich Romantic style and have become staples in the brass repertoire today. Despite being largely overlooked during his lifetime, Ewald’s music has enjoyed a revival and is admired for its lyricism, craftsmanship, and idiomatic brass writing.
