Viktor Ullmann was a Czech composer, conductor, and pianist who lived from 1898 to 1944. He was a prolific composer, writing over 100 works in various genres, including operas, symphonies, chamber music, and songs. Ullmann's music is often characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and complex rhythms. He was also a gifted conductor and pianist, and he frequently performed his own works.
Ullmann was born in Teschen, Austria-Hungary (now Cieszyn, Poland). He studied music at the Vienna Conservatory and the Prague Conservatory. After graduating, he worked as a conductor and pianist in various European cities. In 1933, he was appointed music director of the Brno Opera. However, he was forced to resign from this position in 1939 after the Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia. Ullmann was arrested by the Nazis in 1942 and sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. He was later transferred to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was murdered in 1944.
