Heinrich Hoffmann was a 19th-century German psychiatrist and author, best known for his illustrated children's book "Der Struwwelpeter" (Shockheaded Peter). Published in 1845, this collection of cautionary tales for children became a classic of German children's literature. The book features stories with exaggerated consequences for misbehavior, like the title character who never combs his hair or cuts his nails. Hoffmann originally wrote and illustrated the book as a Christmas present for his young son, but it went on to achieve widespread popularity and has been translated into many languages.
In addition to his literary work, Hoffmann had a career in medicine. He worked as a psychiatrist in Frankfurt and was involved in reforming the treatment of mental patients. His approach to both medicine and children's literature was influenced by his experiences and observations as a doctor and father.
