The Coasters are an American rhythm and blues/rock and roll vocal group that achieved fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Originally formed in 1955 as The Robins, the group underwent several lineup changes before emerging as The Coasters. With their charismatic vocals and humorous storytelling, they became known for a string of hits that were characterized by the songwriting and producing duo Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The original and classic lineup consisted of Carl Gardner, Billy Guy, Will "Dub" Jones, and Cornell Gunter.
The Coasters' clever lyrics, infectious melodies, and comedic undertones resonated with audiences, earning them a place in the musical landscape with timeless hits such as "Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown," and "Searchin'," the latter of which is frequently cited as one of the defining songs of the nascent rock and roll era. Their unique sound bridged the gap between doo-wop and early rock and roll, making them one of the few acts to successfully navigate the transition between musical eras. The Coasters' popularity led to several compilations and live albums over the years, celebrating the enduring appeal of their work. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, marking their lasting impact on the genre and solidifying their legacy as rock and roll pioneers.
