Born in 1935, he studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and later became a leading figure in the Dutch avant-garde movement. Schat's music often incorporated elements of serialism, aleatoricism, and electronic music, and he was particularly interested in exploring the relationship between music and technology. He composed a wide range of works, including orchestral pieces, chamber music, operas, and electronic compositions. Schat also served as the artistic director of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and he was a professor at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He passed away in 2003, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking and influential music.
