Hank Ballard was an influential rhythm and blues singer and songwriter, best known for penning the hit "The Twist" which later became iconically associated with Chubby Checker. Born John Henry Kendricks in Detroit, Michigan, on November 18, 1927, Ballard's early love for music set the stage for a career that would help shape the sound of R&B and rock and roll. Starting off as a backup singer in the group The Royals (who later became The Midnighters), he soon stepped into the spotlight with his charismatic voice and knack for crafting catchy tunes.
The 1950s and 1960s were Ballard's heyday, during which he and The Midnighters released a string of hits, including "Work With Me, Annie" and "Finger Poppin' Time." Ballard's music was characterized by its raw, soulful energy and often risqué subject matter, which at times ran afoul of radio censors but nonetheless solidified his position as a pioneer in the genre. His contributions to music were recognized by his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Though Hank Ballard passed away on March 2, 2003, his music lives on, reflecting the enduring appeal of R&B's early days and the indelible mark he left on the world of music.
