Chocolate Milk was a funk and soul band out of New Orleans that made a big splash in the 1970s and early '80s. Formed in 1974, the group blended deep grooves, tight horn arrangements, and plenty of energy—earning comparisons to contemporaries like Kool & the Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire. Their debut album, Action Speaks Louder Than Words, featured the title track which became a funk classic and has been frequently sampled in hip-hop, including by artists like Eric B. & Rakim.
The band served as the studio and touring band for legendary New Orleans producer Allen Toussaint for several years, which helped hone their dynamic sound. Over their career, Chocolate Milk released several albums that showcased their growing embrace of disco, funk, and R&B styles, including hits like “Girl Callin’” and “Blue Jeans.” Though they disbanded in the early 1980s, their music lives on through compilation albums and the extensive influence they've had on hip-hop and funk lovers alike.
