Sanford Clark

Sanford Clark was an American rockabilly and country singer best known for his 1956 hit single “The Fool.” Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Clark’s smooth baritone voice stood out in the burgeoning rock ’n’ roll scene of the 1950s. “The Fool,” written by Lee Hazlewood and produced by master guitarist Al Casey, became a crossover success, charting on both the country and pop charts, and helped define the moody, echo-laden sound that Hazlewood later became famous for.

Although he never replicated the commercial success of “The Fool,” Sanford Clark continued to record into the 1960s and beyond, often collaborating with Hazlewood. His music, a unique mix of rockabilly, country, and early rock, has earned him a cult following among fans of vintage American roots music. Clark's contributions to the genre are fondly remembered by collectors and enthusiasts of ’50s rock and roll.
