Ryoji Shinomoto is a Japanese guitarist and multi-instrumentalist best known for his work in the Samurai Metal band Ryujin (formerly GYZE). Hailing from Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, he grew up with a deep love for Scandinavian melodic death metal, particularly connecting with Children of Bodom due to the shared climate between his hometown and Finland. In 2025, he released his debut solo album *Children of Bushido* – a tribute to Alexi Laiho featuring bold reimaginings of Children of Bodom tracks infused with traditional Japanese instruments like shamisen, koto, and taiko drums.
A self-described shy kid who found solace in metal, Shinomoto began playing guitar at age eight, citing Kiss, Iron Maiden, and In Flames as early inspirations. His music blends blistering melodic death metal with folkloric Japanese elements, a style showcased both through Ryujin’s work and his solo project. The album *Children of Bushido* reflects his lifelong fandom for Laiho’s songwriting, released on what would have been the late guitarist’s 46th birthday.
