Victor Simon was a renowned Soviet and Russian cellist born in Moscow in 1930. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory, graduating in 1952, and went on to become a laureate of competitions in Prague (1950) and Berlin (1951). Simon served as the principal cellist of the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio (formerly known as the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio) from 1961 until his retirement in 2019. During his career, he made over seventy solo recordings for radio, including performances of cello concertos from various eras.
In addition to his orchestral work, Victor Simon was a distinguished educator. He taught at the Russian Academy of Musical Arts from 1980, becoming an assistant professor in 1988 and a professor in 1993. In 1999, he was awarded a badge of honor for his contributions to culture. His recent releases include works by notable composers such as Tchaikovsky, Schumann, and Haydn, showcasing his prowess in classical cello repertoire. Victor Simon passed away in 2021 at the age of 91.
