Sea Level

Sea Level was an American band that blended jazz, blues, and rock to create a distinct Southern sound. Formed in 1976, after the disbanding of The Allman Brothers Band, the group was led by keyboardist Chuck Leavell, who later became famous for his work with The Rolling Stones. Initially, Sea Level started as a quartet featuring other former members of The Allman Brothers, including bassist Lamar Williams and drummer Jaimoe. Guitarist Jimmy Nalls rounded out the initial lineup, which established the band’s blend of progressive jazz-rock and Southern soul.

Their self-titled debut album "Sea Level" was released in 1977 and set the stage for their work throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, including well-received albums like "Cats on the Coast" (1977) and "On the Edge" (1978). "Long Walk on a Short Pier" (1979) further showcased their signature sound, a fusion of intricate musical passages with approachable melodies. The band's final album "Ball Room" (1980) was released before they ultimately disbanded in the early 80s. While they never achieved massive commercial success, Sea Level garnered critical acclaim and maintained a dedicated following, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence Southern rock and jazz fusion musicians.
