Von Südenfed was a short-lived but intriguing collaboration between Mark E. Smith—legendary frontman of British post-punk pioneers The Fall—and the German electronic duo Mouse on Mars, made up of Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma. The group brought together Smith’s unmistakably abrasive vocal style and cryptic lyrics with Mouse on Mars’ glitchy, experimental beats, resulting in a unique blend of post-punk attitude and IDM/electronic production.
Their most well-known release is the 2007 album Tromatic Reflexxions, which showcased their adventurous sound and genre-defying approach. Tracks like “Fledermaus Can't Get It” and “The Rhinohead” exemplify the off-kilter, energetic synergy between Smith’s distinctive delivery and Mouse on Mars’ warped soundscapes. Though their time together was brief, Von Südenfed left a lasting impression as a one-of-a-kind project merging underground scenes from Manchester and Düsseldorf.
