Yannis Xylouris

Yannis Xylouris, also known fondly as Giannis Xylouris or by the nickname Psarogiannis (after the Greek word for 'fisherman'), hails from Anogeia in Crete and is a part of the legendary Xylouris family who are synonymous with Cretan music. Born into a rich musical heritage, Yannis carries the legacy of his famous uncle Nikos Xylouris, one of the most important figures of modern Cretan music, and his father Antonis Xylouris, known by the nickname Psarantonis, who is also a revered musician. Growing up in a milieu where traditional music is both a way of life and a passionate pursuit, Yannis has developed a profound expertise in playing the Cretan lute and is admired for his vocal ability that beautifully channels the spirit of Crete's historical and poetic wealth.

Over the years, Yannis Xylouris has contributed significantly to the preservation and evolution of Cretan music. His discography includes works such as "To simban (the universe)", which explores the vastness of human experience akin to the boundlessness of the cosmos through Cretan melodies, and "Enotites", an album that underscores the unity and communal aspects of Cretan culture. Other notable works include "Cretan Traditional Melodies With the Lute" where he showcases the instrument's versatility, and "Erotokritos", a musical rendition of the eponymous 17th-century romantic epic poem that is foundational to Cretan literature. His music is celebrated for maintaining the soulful traditions of his homeland while also reaching out to a wider audience, enabling the Cretan sound to echo not just within the confines of his island but also across the world.
