Mal Devisa is the solo project of Deja Carr, an 18-year-old vocalist, poet, and artist from Amherst, Massachusetts. She started making music around age 12 and initially played bass in an all-female band called Who’da Funk it? before developing Mal Devisa as her personal outlet, blending genres like jazz, noise, folk, hip hop, and experimental sounds. Her music is known for its genre-defying, deeply emotional quality, combining venomous yet sweet lyrics with dynamic rhythms that create an immersive, almost otherworldly listening experience.
Her debut album, *Kiid* (2016), established her as a compelling artist with soft blues influences and 90s hip-hop beats, showcasing her distinctive voice and lyrical prowess. After signing with Topshelf Records, she released *Palimpsesa* in 2025, a compilation of songs written across a decade, highlighting various stages of her artistic journey. Mal Devisa’s live performances are noted for their raw intensity, making her an artist who truly creates a unique moment in music. She has earned recognition from outlets like NPR and AfroPunk and continues to tour actively, expanding her devoted fanbase.
