Gunter Herbig

Gunter Herbig is a distinguished classical and modern guitarist originally born in Brazil, who grew up in Portugal and Germany before settling in New Zealand in 1989. His multicultural background deeply influences his music, blending Brazilian sensuousness, German precision, and Portuguese passion into a unique and expressive style. Over his extensive career, Gunter has become a pivotal figure in New Zealand's classical music scene, having taught classical guitar and chamber music at major institutions including Auckland University, Massey Conservatorium, and the New Zealand School of Music, where he was head of guitar and chamber music until 2008.

Herbig is known for his adventurous musical interpretations that often bridge classical and electric guitar realms. His recordings include three volumes of New Zealand guitar music on the Naxos label, as well as works by composers such as Douglas Lilburn, John Cage, and David Farquhar. His recent projects reflect a creative and exploratory spirit, including electric guitar interpretations of mystic G.I. Gurdjieff's piano music and reimagined compositions by prominent modern composers. Beyond performance and teaching, he is celebrated for fostering a direct and personal connection between composer, performer, and audience, emphasizing musical adventure and discovery.
