Panama Francis

Panama Francis was an American jazz and swing drummer known for his dynamic playing and versatility across genres. Born David "Panama" Francis in 1918, he rose to prominence in the 1930s and 1940s, playing with big names like Roy Eldridge, Lucky Millinder, and the Oscar Peterson Trio. Francis had a long and impressive career that also included work in rock and roll during the 1950s, drumming on many hit records of the era. He later led his own group, the Savoy Sultans, reviving the name of the famous swing band.

Francis was especially admired for his precise timing and energetic style, making him a sought-after session drummer. Whether in jazz clubs or recording studios, he brought a contagious rhythm that helped shape several eras of American music. His work spans decades, and he remained active well into the 1980s and 1990s, continuing to perform and record with various ensembles.
